What is Kefir?

Kefir (pronounced kuh-feer or keh-feer) is a naturally fermented probiotic beverage using a SCOBY culture (Symbiotic Colony Of Bacteria and Yeast). There are two variations of the Kefir SCOBY, one cultures milk and the other cultures sugar water. The difference lies in the food  required for the bacteria and yeast. Our water kefir SCOBY lives on sugar, keeping our kefir dairy-free.

So it's like kombucha?

Yes and No. Both Kefir and Kombucha are naturally fermented beverages from a SCOBY containing beneficial bacteria and yeast. From there, they diverge in many ways. Here is a quick comparison list:

  • Fermented in sugar water solution - caffeine free

  • Probiotics support upper and lower GI tract cellular health, immune system and digestion

  • Uncarbonated: our Infused Water Kefir are not fermented for fizz.

  • Fermented in black or green tea solution - caffeinated

  • Probiotics support digestion and cellular health

  • Carbonated: like a sparkly apple cider vinegar drink

does water kefir contain caffeine?

Nope! Water Kefir is caffeine-free.

what are probiotics?

The Mayo Clinic says "Probiotics are good bacteria that are either the same as or very similar to the bacteria that are already in your body." And the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says "[B]acteria that are normally present in our intestines help digest food, destroy disease-causing microorganisms, and produce vitamins."

Why should I consume probiotics?

Back to the Mayo Clinic "Some research suggests that having too many of the "bad" and not enough of the "good" bacteria — caused in part by an unhealthy diet — can wreak all sorts of havoc on your body's systems. This imbalance can lead to weight gain, skin conditions, constipation or diarrhea, and various chronic health conditions." Consuming live active probiotics, like those found in water kefir, can improve the number of good bacteria in your gut and help your body find balance to better support your health.

where are the bubbles?

Water Kefir is most commonly carbonated, but we chose to forego the bubbles because we love the light refreshing body of our Infused Water Kefir without them. We feel that this lets us highlight the delicious raw fruits and herbs inside and, frankly, make for a totally crushable probiotic refresher.
